KaaLai - full of surprises

Surprise No.1

Ajith has been a constant with NIC Arts. Only once did the production house join hands with Vikram and that was for Kaadhal Sadugudu.

Thavam - a preview

Arun Vijay was both jubilant and tense when you caught him at a shooting spot recently. His Thavam releases this October and the young man is in dire need of a hit. “I’m sure it will work out well,” he said. After Thavam, Arun is all set to take off with Veda. “Now that I’ve had a satisfying role in Thavam I’ve begun to choose projects with extra caution, and I’m happy Veda has come my way. The role has a many dimensions and the screenplay is impressive. I’m convinced it’s the right film to take up after a solid part in Thavam.” Veda will be the launch-pad for director Nithyakumar, who has worked under the likes of K. Subash and S. J. Suryah. “It’s a love story in a commercial format,” said Arun.

Inbha - a preview

It’s a scenic spot in Ooty. Both Shaam and Sneha break into a jig. Sai Thirulog swings into action with his camera, while P.B. Balaji’s tunes play in the background. The lead actors go about their steps relentlessly, till the director blo ws the whistle to announce the shot is cranked. While the unit packs up, S. T. Venddan, who wields the megaphone for Rathnamala Movies’ Inbha, gives details about the film.

“It’s a love story and a handsome Shaam suits the role. The story delves into the impact of love on the hero’s life. Sneha plays the female lead. Vivek appears in the comic interludes. There are some flashbacks too, which are yet to be canned. Apart from Ooty, we have shot in Chennai, Thalaikonam and Hyderabad. We have shot extensively at Ramoji Film City and Golconda Fort.”


The Shaam-Sneha combination is not something new. The duo has worked in films such as “Aei Nee Rombha Azhaga Irukae” and “ABCD”. Says Shaam, “I play the role of a bubbly young man. There’s scope to experiment with my looks as my role demands varied get-ups. Though the story is based on love, there’s plenty of action too. I’m sure the audience will love it. There’s a liberal dose of sentiment.” Sneha, who shares a fine on-screen chemistry with Shaam says, “There are some scenes which involve deep emotions. Both of us have taken great pains to perform well. I don the role of a talkative girl, who loves spending money and having a good time.”

The film’s music director P.B. Balaji was a keyboard player for A. R. Rahman.

Thanks to “Sivaji”, Vivek’s career is looking up. He tells sreedhar pillai why satire, not slapstick, works for the urban audience

As the Rajnikanth-starrer Sivaji celebrates its 100th day, the man who is smiling the most is Vivek! The film has resurrected his career that was going through a rough patch, thanks to his decision to turn hero with Solli Adippen, which is still in the cans. During this period, contemporaries such as Vadivelu have zoomed past him and a fresh set of comedians has emerged on the scene. Post-Sivaji, Vivek has bounced back and regained lost ground with his core audience — city-based youth and kids who simply love to repeat the punch lines from the film. Sample this: “Sixukkappuram sevenda, Sivajikappuram evenda?”

“Sivaji has given me a new lease of life; it was teamwork that made it possible. Rajni sir was magnanimous and he understood the importance of how good humour can boost a film, while Shankar saw to it that my character stayed on till the end of the film.” Thanks to Sivaji, Vivek has now become sought-after as the hero’s side-kick, rather than being part of an incidental comedy track .

Last week, he was roped in to be part of two big movies — Kuruvi with Vijay and Kandasamy with Vikram. Vivek says comedy has been an essential ingredient for the success of a Tamil film from the days of N. S. Krishnan. “Tell me one super hit Tamil film which did not have humour?” asks Vivek and continues, “NSK, Thangavelu, Chandrababu, Nagesh, Thengai Sreenivasan, Venniraadai Moorthy, Surulirajan, Y.G. Mahendra, Goundamani and Senthil have made people laugh for generations. Everyone had a unique style and was successful. Today, Vadivelu and I carry on the good work of making people forget their worries and having a hearty laugh.”

Vivek agrees that his kind of humour works best with the urban audience as he tries to combine comedy with creating awareness about social issues. Compared to other comedians in Tamil cinema, Vivek is more a satirist than a slapstick comedian. His comedy tracks are drawn from everyday life. Says the comedian with his trademark smile: “I learn a lot by observing people. Tamil and English newspapers are my biggest source for comedy tracks along with news channels. Whenever I get a chance, I would like to point out the social and civic issues that have to be addressed by the common man. You will invariably find a message in my comedy.”

What does he have to say about the charge that his comedy fails to strike a chord in the rural areas because of an overdose of English in his dialogues? Vivek retorts, “Do you know that some countries lag behind India because of the people’s lack of knowledge of English? A week ago, when I was in California to raise funds for the Adyar Cancer Institute, I was overwhelmed by the response I received there. Most of them wanted me to repeat the dialogues from my films. Millions of Tamils are doing extremely well outside Tamil Nadu, because they can speak and write English.”

Though Vivek grew up in small towns such as Tirunelveli and Madurai, he spent a good part of his life in Chennai, which shaped his attitude and outlook.

So, what’re his next projects? “I’m doing a village film with Raj Kiran, titled Alanganallur, where I speak chaste Tamil!” He is also busy with a dozen films featuring superstars as well as newcomers.

As far as his launch film as hero, Solli Adippen, is concerned, it is likely to release by the end of this year.

Saawariya - Music preview

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali has spared no efforts to ensure that the music of his "Saawariya" is the best. He reportedly spent more than one year with music director Monty Sharma in finalising the tunes, vocalists and arrangements for all the songs.

The film has a total of 11 songs by singers as varied as Alka Yagnik, Kunal Ganjawala and Richa Sharma. Not all the songs will feature in the film. Monty has already proved his passion and prowess with his background scores for Sanjay Bhansali's "Devdas" and "Black".

Contrary to reports about Monty being under pressure to deliver the right background music for "Saawariya", the versatile composer has started work on the background score for the film.Says a source close to the project, "Where's the question of Monty being pressurised by the director to scrap and re-do the background music, when in fact Monty began composing the background score of 'Saawariya' just recently?"Says the source.

"Though the music of Bhansali's films has always been a predominant stuff, never has so much stress been there on putting across the drama and emotions of the script through song. There are love songs, mujras, a qawwalli... it's Sanjay Leela Bhansali's most ambitious score ever.

"The music on the Sony/BMG label was released this week, while the film's release date remains unchanged at Nov 9. A separate album of "Saawariya"'s background score is expected to be released after the film's release.

This film has debutant actors from Kapoors family. Ranbir and Soham.

Soham being the daughter of my favourit Actor Anil Kapoor.

Sivaji - 100 days

Superstar Rajnikant's blockbuster "Sivaji: The Boss" has completed 100 days but no celebrations marked the occasion because producers say it has many more milestones to cross.

"We have only crossed the half-way mark. Let 'Sivaji' cross still bigger marks. Then we will celebrate!" said S.C. Babu, CEO of AVM Productions, under whose banner the film was made.

The movie was released amid much hype and fanfare, and the suspense was heightened with its release date getting postponed several times.In the bargain, several small and big films changed their release dates so that their films did not clash with Rajnikant's big movie.

But the 'Boss' came only when he was ready.One big film that really suffered was Suresh Balaji's Ajit-starrer 'Kireedam'. Ajit usually has a release on his birthday May 1. But this year, his 'Kireedam' did not release on the special day. However he did not show any disappointment, as he had no desire to question the 'Boss'.

First came the music of "Sivaji". And music from A.R. Rahman crossed all barriers. Even those who didn't know a word of Tamil listened to "Sivaji: The Boss" and sang "Vaaji Vaaji ...".And when "Sivaji" arrived in style May 31, there was mass euphoria not only in Tamil Nadu but all over India.

It was for the first time that a regional film created such national frenzy. As there are around 140 digital theatres in Tamil Nadu, for the first time a large number of digital prints were dispatched to all the cinema halls. Digital prints apart, 400 Tamil and 300 Telugu prints were sent to theatres across the world.

For the first time, a Tamil film had simultaneous releases in the US, Canada, Britain, Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Australia.People stood in serpentine queues across South India to catch the first day first show of the blockbuster, and the film ran to full houses in North Indian cities too.

"Sivaji" is Rajnikant's 100th Tamil film, and the ninth for AVM. All the eight earlier films Rajni did for AVM were huge hits ... And the latest is their biggest ever.A film completing 100 days is considered a big event as it has become a rarity. Surprisingly, when "Sivaji" completed 100 days a few days ago, there were no celebrations.

Rajnikant, however, made a trip to the famed Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh to thank god for the film's success - he had visited the Lord Venkateswara temple before its release also.And if one goes by AVM Productions' CEO, celebrations will have to wait until "Sivaji" completes 200 days!

ULiyin Osai - A preview

Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi took a day off his official work and held a day-long story discussion session for a Tamil film "Uliyin Osai" based on his famous novel of the same title written several years ago.

Ilavenil, a writer and a long-time associate of the Kalaignar, who has come forward to direct the film, producers S.P. Murugesan and Jayamurugan and two assistant directors participated in the session.

Ilavenil has written the screenplay and this is the first time Karunanidhi has permitted an outsider to pen the screenplay for his story. The story is set in the 10th century and it is about romance between a sculptor and a dancer.The Chief Minister personally approved the cast. Vineeth and Keethi Chawla will play the lead pair. Ilayaraja will compose the music.

Shooting of the film will be inaugurated on Oct. 6 at Prasad Studio. Of the commitment and dedication of the Kalaignar, Ilavenil said throughout the discussion he sat erect, like a Rishi in a penance, and listened to the screenplay for six hours at a stretch. Not even phone calls were allowed, according to Ilavenil.

After a lunch break, the discussions continued for another six hours. "Despite being a veteran, Kalaignar was listening to the script as if it was his first project. He was amazing."Karunanidhi is said to have made changes in the script and also explained why he had to make those changes. "With his magic treatment, what started off as a simple story has now become a grand project," Ilavenil reportedly said.

The conclave-like session was held at a guest house near Mahabalipuram, where the Chief Minister normally goes for rest and relaxation or for serious deliberations on important issuesKarunanidhi left his Gopalapuram residence at 4.30 am and reached the guest house in an hour. Ilavenil, the two producers and the two assistant directors followed him in a black Sumo.

It was the Chief Minister who sent for Ilavenil and fixed the session so early in the morning. Ilavenil said the Kalaignar was very particular that the essence of the story is retained..."that is why he insisted on this meeting".

Thoovanam in International Festival

The recent flick "Thoovanam" directed by duo Haricharan & Newton enters the international arena.

This film will be screened in the International Film Festival on October 6th, 2007 to be held at Kerala.

Thoovanam has also been selected by the Indian Panorama for National Awards.

Sivi - Thriller

K.R.Senthilnathan makes his directorial debut with an eerie thriller "Sivi". The story is about a ghost who takes revenger on her killers. The film features upcoming actors such as Yogi, grandson of Thengai Sreenivasan, Jayashree Rao and Anuja in the lead. The music, scored by Dharan has turned out to be the best selling album this year. Dharan whose album "Parijaatham" was a hit, has tuned some peppy hip hop numbers with new voices which has caught the imagination of the youth. The film screened last week had a decent opening.

Movie Charts - Top 5 - Sep 2007

Action king Arjun's "Marudumalai" has got a fantastic opening across Tamil Nadu and has even toppled "Sivaji: The Boss" to reach the top.

The top five Tamil films are:

1. "Marudumalai" - Director: Suraj.

A masala film of Arjun that reminds one of "Kireedam" but the comedy scenes between Arjun and Vadivel have gone in the film's favour.

2. "Ammuvagia Naan" - Director: Padma Magan.

The success of this sensitively made film on a sex worker has surprised many. Kudos to the team for their courage!

3. "Sivaji" - Director: Shankar.

The blockbuster is going to celebrate 100 days now.

4. "Urchagam" - Director: Ravichandran.

The film was released without any fanfare and got an average opening but its collections are getting better by the day.

5. "Arya" - Director: Balasekhar.

With the success of "Arya", a typical formula entertainer, R. Madhavan has strengthened his fan base in B and C centres.

Thoovanam Nethra in Chennaiyil oru Mazhaikaalam

I have already written in my review in Thoovanam that Nethra has all the potential to hit the silver screens in a big way if she is properly moulded.

Director Gautham Menon has signed Nethra after watching the promos of Thoovanam in which she portrayed the role of an NRI girl, for his movie "Chennaiyil oru mazhaikaalam".

Director Gautham Menon has started shooting for "Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikaalam" with Trisha in the lead. Nikita, who had a brief stint in Tamil and now in Telugu, Nethra who featured in "Thoovanam"and four boys Veera, Dev, Satish and Shyam, are the other actors and they are all new faces.

"Chennaiyil.." is the story revolving around IT professionals.Gautham has just competed 15-day shoot for the film. It is a new genre which Gautham has not tried before. According to him, it will be a complete entertainer, a light film with Trisha leading the cast.

Though Nethra is to play a complementary role, she believes her role also will be significant one. "Every character in Gautham sir's film is well drawn out. So I am rest assured about mine too," she told mediapersons. She is all praise for Gautham. Though she is a newcomer, requiring several re-takes, "Gautham sir was very patient with me and never lost his temper at any point of time" during the 15-day shoot, she said.

Originally, "Chennaiyil..." was announced as a project with actor Surya in the lead. Gautham clarified that "Chennaiyil.." with Trisha and a whole lot of youngsters is new and the story is different. He has taken only the title.

The earlier "Chennaiyil.." with Surya has been renamed "Vaaranam Aayiram" which is on hold with Surya getting busy with another project "Vael". On the technical front, Gautham has music is by A.R. Rehman, art direction by Rajeevan and editing by Antony.

Ammuvagiya Naan - Movie Review

"Ammuvagiya Naan" is an exciting tale of a commercial sex worker faced with emotional crises. Though the story is nothing new, director Padmamagan has treated the subject with skill making it different. Joining forces with him are Parthiban and greenhorn Bharati. One can say the film has broken new ground in depicting romance in a new perspective. The script is so well structured that the narration is even and smooth flowing. A bold theme has been deftly handled by the director and his team.

STORY:

Gowrishankar (Parthiban) is a famous writer and the focus of his works is on subjects of social relevance and those touching on women. Ammu (Bharati) is an orphan brought up in a prostitute's house - in an environment where morals are thrown to the winds. In course of time, Ammu gets involved in the profession. Gowrishankar happens to visit her place in his quest to write a novel on the life of a commercial sex worker. The writer sees young and pretty Ammu there and empathizes with her situation. Both are attracted to each other. Gowrishankar decides to marry her notwithstanding her social moorings and her past. His emotional involvement with Ammu brings a refreshing change in her. She started savoring her new relationship with the man. Gowrishankar completes his novel titled "Ammuvagiya Naan" and wants it sponsored for a national award. He approaches the president of a literary association (Mahadevan) who demands a price, which is a night with Ammu. The high-intensity drama follows.

Parthiban is known to love doing bold and unorthodox roles. In "Ammu", he gives a splendid performance as a writer with a mission and as a man who is committed to bringing a socially stigmatized girl into the social mainstream.

Bharati, whose three earlier films add up to nothing, has got a good break. Her poignant expressions coupled with her body language mark her out as an actress of no small caliber. As a sex worker, she trips at times more because of inhibitions inherent in the nature of the role. In the latter part, she comes out with touching performance especially when she craves to be a helpful companion to the writer. Sadhana plays a procurer who nonetheless kind and understanding and she does a neat job.

The director has done well to enhance the aesthetic quality of the film by not overplaying the lewdness in the form of bedroom scenes that is normally associated with the flesh trade in cinema.

The subject is so engrossing that one does not feel the absence of a comedy track.M.S.Prabbu's camera and Sagu's art combine to produce a striking impact. Suresh Urs' editing deserves mention. Sabesh-Murali's music is melodious and the duo show promise.A bold theme has been deftly handled by Padmamagan and his team.

Tamil Movie Review - Thoovanam

With lot of expectations the movie "Thoovanam" had hit the theatres today.

I had watched this movie First day, First Show in Chennai.

I would write my detailed review on this movie later.

Just a cursory glance at the imposing names that comprise the technical team and you know Sri Vaishnavi Productions’ Thoovaanam (U) should belong to the ‘different from the usual’ league. The film lives up to expe ctations. Treated with finesse, it is an insight into the psyche of the present day youth. A whole new crop of actors makes a foray into cinema with Thoovaanam. However, hero Kaushik is a familiar (television) face.

Karthi (Kaushik), an architect, is desperately in love with Anu (Nethra). When his feelings go unrequited he’s unable to take it and attempts to take his life. Born and brought up in the U.S., Anu’s bold and brazen nature is very different from his. But soon she changes her mind and romance blossoms. It is at this point that the story takes an interesting turn.

When one proposes, the other accepts or rejects. Why such animus on Anu’s part? Her rudeness is as perplexing as Karthi’s bitterness. At no point does she lead him on, because the typical city-bred is shown as being open with all. The influence of his friends’ words is not spelt out strongly either. So you neither sympathise with Karthi nor empathise with Anu.

Kaushik is apt. Yet you can’t help feeling that he could have given more punch to his role. The pensive look he often sports doesn’t convey much. The slim, dusky and doe-eyed Nethra is fiery in comparison. But why does she shake her head so often? The three friends of Karthik — played by Maurya, Ponnumani and Suraj Krishna — make an impression. Tusharaa as the mute Gayatri could have been more expressive. And, of course, Sriman is a welcome surprise.

Madhu Ambat’s camera paints lustrous pictures in ravishing tones. His lighting is another enticing aspect. And be it the interiors, beach or roadside, P. Krishnamurthy’s (art) ethnic touch lends beauty and class to the ambience. Thoovaanam’s melodies (Isaac Thomas) are an aural delight. Thomas seems to believe in using very few instruments and making the most of them. His re-recording is particularly appealing. The violin in the titles (by Ganesh of Ganesh-Kumaresh fame) is an exercise in euphony, and the lilting theme song will ring in your ears for long. The concepts of the song sequences and the aesthetic use of graphics in them create admirable visuals.

Taut narration (Haricharan and Newton) aided by slick editing (J.N. Harsha) help Thoovaanam maintain its tempo till the end. Judiciously, the writer-director duo of S. Haricharan and Newton have eschewed item numbers, unbelievable f ights and contrived comedy, and have included peppy numbers for that sprightly feel. The clever balancing act should pay off.

Bottomline : More an urbanite’s look at love!

Article published in THE HINDU, Chennai edition, issue dated September 6, 2007:

Thoovanam is the debut film of directors Haricharan and Newton. It is also the first film for heroine Nethra. Ace cinematographer Madhu Ambat is also associated with the film.

Director Haricharan says the film is a simple story of two young people, who fall in love. Their relationship has an impact on the lives of their family members and friends.

The film has all the ingredients of a love story, and is also filled with intrigue but there is no violence.

"We have deviated a lot from the usual commercial elements in Tamil cinema, but we have added some new ones" says Haricharan.

Dialogues have been kept to the minimum. The directors were initially apprehensive when the first copy was shown to censor board authorities, film personalities and a small audience. But, the feedback turned out to be positive.

"We were happy to hear comments like "retro classic" or "neat film" Haricharan says.

Aaditya is the hero of the film, while Sreeman and Banuchander perform guest roles.

National awared winning camera persons Madhu Ambat has said that the film is unique, and that it would certainly work with the audience.
