A short story penned by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi 43 years ago is set to be made into a film by director P. Kannan.Karunanidhi wrote the story, "Saarappallam Chamundi", for the special Pongal issue of DMK journal 'Murasoli' in 1964.
The same story was re-published in the Republic Day issue of the journal under the title "Uliyin Oasai" in the same year. The film will be made under the second title, which means "Sound of the Hammer", and will be released on Pongal, the harvest festival of Tamil Nadu that falls in January.
The Periya Kovil in Thanjavur, built by Raja Raja Chola, provides the backdrop for the story. Legend has it that the king wanted 108 special sculptures to be made in the temple but only 82 could be completed. The story is about why the project remained incomplete.Poet Ilavenil will write the screenplay and dialogues.
Maestro Ilayaraja scores music for the film produced by S.P. Murugesan under the banner of J. Nandini Arts.The cast for the film, which will hit the marquee Jan 14, is yet to be finalised.Karunanidhi started his career as a scriptwriter and shot to fame with "Parasakti", which was thespian Sivaji Ganesan's debut vehicle.
