Now over to the New Indian Express "Expresso" which carried an article today on Saaral Album.

Gopakumar is out with his debut album, Saaral. He spoke to Expresso on his maiden ride through the world of Tamil pop.

Passion for music can drive anyone to any extent. And that’s what drove Gopakumar, a software professional working with a popular IT company in the city to cut out an album. His debut album, in the Tamil pop genre titled Saaral (meaning drizzle) was released recently. Reciprocating to the mounting appreciation for his album, the band behind Saaral is now coming out with videos for two of their songs Ethetho and Vizhiyoram. The band has Gopakumar with two other popular musicians who are know for their musical talent in the city, also a part of the Chennai based rock band Rainbow Bridge – Sanjeev Philip Thomas and Benny Dayal. “The album wouldn’t have been possible without their ideas and guidance” says an excited Gopakumar.

Being inspired by music directors MS Viswanathan and Illayaraja, it all started when 15-year-ld Gopakumar started writing and composing songs on his own. “I was also performing in my college band”, recalls Gopakumar. But he never had an opportunity to expose his talent. Around the time, when he joined an MNC in the city, his co-brother Ravi, surprised at his in-born talent, encouraged him to cut an album. “But it was a tough task for me to find a label for my album” he says.

Reviving his old compositions and lyrics, Gopakumar started his journey to join the list of Tamil pop singers in the city. And joining him were Sanjeev who is a guitarist with music director A.R.Rehman and Benny Dayal, a well-known playback singer. “I was introduced to Sanjeev and Benny through a friend of mine and since they are professionally trained performers, they helped me a great deal”, says Gopakumar.

The album “Saaral has seven songs based on love, with lyrics by Gopakumar, Iqbal and Kavinger Piriyan and performed by Benny, Sanjeev, Gopakumar and playback singer Unnikrishnan. The group is now working on the video that is slated to hit the small screens at the end of December. “When we found the label Saregama after a long search, we knew our album would be a hit” he says. Joining the list of fans that have appreciated therir work is Gopakumar’s colleague who is now funding him for making the videos. And once the video hits the television channels, Gopakumar in collaboration with Rainbow Bridge will start working on their second album and this time it will be a Tamil rock album with lyrics picked up from Bharathiyar’s and Bharatidasan’s poems. “No one has even tried to make a Tamil rock album. So, we thought if giving it a shot. I hope people will like it and won’t have a problem with us using Bharathiar’s poems”, he signs off.
